About this blog

This blog accompanies a course on Contemporary Art taught in 2008 in Hong Kong by Dr Carol Archer. The course is part of Lingnan University's Visual Studies Programme. The course introduces the vibrant and varied world of contemporary art. It begins by locating contemporary art in relation to its historical framework, examining the impact of the shift to postmodernism. The course then takes a thematic approach to art from the 1980’s to the present. Themes discussed include time and history, place, identity and the body. In the final unit of the course we examine the increasing tendency for artists to work collaboratively, looking at how prominent contemporary artist-duos and artist-groups have engaged with the themes in question. This blog documents some of the visual and written materials that have accompanied students' presentations that link particular works of art to the themes and issues we discuss in class.
